This box has taken an entire semester to finish. I made all the carving first and then I was trying to figure out what to do with them. Eventually I decided to turn them into a box. It was very complicated to make the sides to the right height and sand them. In the end it turned out very well.
This semester I've learned to make clay structures and glaze them. I made a rhino and elephant out of clay and learned to hollow out the inside. I worked with weaving wire to make structures. My most favorite skill I learned so far this semester was to carve 2D images into wood. I'd like to learn how to put more detail into the wood though. I want to learn how to layer the wood to be able to show the complexity of hair or a face. I'd like to be able to do it without having to make a 3D sculpture.
The hardest part about making this wood carving was probably the transferring of the pencil onto the wood. The carving itself was very easy. I got my inspiration from watching one of my friends do a cool carving of our school mascot/logo. The tools I used for the carving were balsa wood, carving tools, black wood finish, and clear satin finish. My carving isn't an original piece of art. It is copywrited by Western Michigan. I learned that if you copy something then you need to site the source and can't completely redo the piece. I has to site the back of the piece in MLA format.
This piece was quite challenging at first because findings the correct crayons became difficult. Certain crayons become watery when being melted they drip uncontrollably. The crayons that worked best were ones that became gooey when being melted. I used Popsicle sticks to create an outline of my idea. Once I finished the crayon part I put masking tape over the crayon so I could spray paint on the background. I chose a silverish top and gold for the bottom. This is the first clay animal that I started working on. It hasn't been fired in the kiln yet so hopefully the horns don't break off. I plan to paint the rhino a grayish or black...not quite sure yet. Once the first coat is done I'll either add another coat of paint or just put the varnish on to have it have the glassy look. Later I'll post about the next animal I made and finished look of the clay rhino. I was thinking about making a big Eiffel Tower model, but it didn't go exactly to plan. I didn't have all the materials I needed, and it just didn't look the way I was visioning it. So I decided to hot glue some popsicle sticks to the wire structure and then melt crayons onto it for color. It turned out good and I learned to roll with obstacles in front you.
